Stuffed Turkey for Christmas: The Ultimate Guide to a Perfect Holiday Feast

This classic roasted turkey recipe features a savory stuffing made with onions, celery, and herbs, perfect for holiday gatherings. Seasoned and roasted to golden perfection, it ensures a juicy and flavorful centerpiece for your feast.

  • Total Time: 210 minutes
  • Yield: 10-12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 whole turkey (1214 pounds)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cups celery, finely chopped
  • 4 cups bread cubes (preferably day-old bread)
  • 1 cup chicken broth (more if needed)
  • 1 tablespoon dried sage
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 tablespoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup dried cranberries or raisins (optional)
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • Fresh parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. Let the turkey sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Remove giblets and neck from the cavity.
  3. Rinse the turkey inside and out under cold water and pat dry. Season generously with salt and pepper.
  4. In a large skillet, melt half of the butter (1/2 cup) over medium heat. Add chopped onions and celery, sauté for 5-7 minutes until soft.
  5. Add dried sage, thyme, and rosemary to the skillet and cook for another minute.
  6. In a large mixing bowl, combine sautéed vegetables with bread cubes. Gradually pour in chicken broth until bread is moistened but not soggy.
  7. If using, fold in cranberries or nuts. Add beaten eggs and mix until well combined.
  8. Stuff the turkey cavity with the stuffing, leaving space for expansion. Tie the legs together with kitchen twine and tuck wing tips under the turkey.
  9. Place the turkey breast-side up in a large roasting pan, preferably on a rack. Brush with remaining melted butter and cover loosely with aluminum foil.
  10. Roast the turkey for about 13-15 minutes per pound, approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Check internal temperature halfway through; it should reach 165°F (74°C).
  11. Once cooked, remove from the oven and let rest for 20-30 minutes before carving.
  12. Carve and serve with stuffing on the side, garnished with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • Feel free to customize the stuffing with your favorite ingredients, such as different herbs or vegetables.
  • If you prefer a drier stuffing, use less broth.
  • Make sure to save the turkey drippings for a flavorful gravy!
